Pilots to test GP scheme for commuters.

Patients in parts of London, Nottingham, Manchester and Salford will shortly be able to register with a GP practice of their choice for the first time. During a one-year pilot scheme, patients can choose the GP surgery that best suit their needs, for example near their workplace or home.

The cities were selected because they have high numbers of commuters travelling into the area each day. The sceme will also benefit people who are moving home and wish to remain with their preferred practice, and families who would like a practice near to their children’s school.

Official opening and showcase of services for Bulwell.

Bulwell Riverside (GRT Nottingham LIFTCo) - the new Joint Service Centre bringing together a host of services delivered by NHS Nottingham City, Nottingham City Council, Nottingham CityCare Partnership and Nottingham City Homes all under one roof – was officially opened on Thursday 17 May by The Sheriff of Nottingham, Councillor Merlita Bryan. Building work started in 2009 and was completed in November 2011. The project was developed and delivered by Greater Nottingham LIFT Company Limited, who will also maintain the building over the next 25 years of use.

During the official opening, items were placed and secured in a time capsule which will be installed in the Waterland sculpture by Joseph Ingleby. Waterland is a series of five sculptures inspired by the microscopic desmids and diatoms that inhabit freshwater rivers, and in particular the River Leen.

Cllr Jon Collins, Leader of Nottingham City Council, said: “Bulwell Riverside is the city’s third and largest joint service centre and will become the hub of the community. It offers a range of linked services in an easily accessible, attractive, state-of-the-art building.

“Bulwell Riverside has been selected as a finalist in the ‘Best Community Project’ category at the international Partnerships Awards 2012 which demonstrates just how involved local citizens have been in developing this fantastic facility. Edgbaston focus for medical sector.

Health technology specialist Medilink has teamed up with Birmingham property company Calthorpe Estates to campaign for the Edgbaston area of the city to be given the title.

The two companies say the bid is to give recognition to Edgbaston as a major hub for the medical sector and comes ahead of plans by Calthorpe Estates to re-develop the Pebble Mill TV studios a new dentistry hospital, the University of Birmingham’s School of Dentistry, and a private hospital.

Within walking distance around Edgbaston the two firms claim there are 180 medical organisations, 80 hospitals and specialist centres, including the trauma centre for injured servicemen run by the Queen Elizabeth hospital, Birmingham University, the Department of Health and the Ministry of Defence.

The new Queen Elizabeth hospital, which opened last year at a cost of £545m, is also on land originally gifted by the Calthorpe family, as is the University of Birmingham and Edgbaston, the home of Warwickshire County Cricket Club.

The concept of developing Edgbaston as Birmingham’s Medical Quarter was an idea that medical industry specialist Medilink and Calthorpe Estates discussed more than six years ago.
